Apprenticeship training

Acting by Fire

Youtheatre equips its players, under fire. Meaning we bring on apprentices who want to learn while in mounting a touring production. From the early dramaturg sessions, pre-production meetings, to rehearsals, tech runs, understudy, performance. Our troupe covers all aspects of a touring theatre company, moveable set, props, costume, hair & make-up, lights, sound, stage management, but most importantly we cultivate authentic community. Relationship supersedes program, it trumps product. Our ensemble is without pretention.

Length of Apprenticeship: 12-18 months
Participants: 18-25 years of age

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT . . .
This is training for those who want to sink their teeth into the art and discipline of traveling theatre. We cover the multi facets of crew work; directing; administration; but mainly the craft of acting.
At YTM theatre begins and ends with commitment and accountability.
There are no spectators in our process—only participants.
Production is not secondary. Production is the training.

OUR LINEAGE . . .
Our work stands in direct opposition to decorative, safe, or sentimental theatre.
From Stanislavski, we take rigor: action, intention, discipline, and the demand for psychological and physical truth.
From Marowitz, we take provocation: defining ideas as shapes and staging as argument.
From Beckett, we take endurance and restraint: extreme subtlety, silence as structure, and the courage to be vulnerable.
We distill until only the essential remains—body, breath, space, and presence.

WHAT WE TEACH . . .
Apprentices learn by doing—and by being held accountable.
They will be trained to:
> Break down text and rebuild it through action
> Create theatre with voice, body, imagination, and passion
> Work inside an ensemble where ego is balanced and commitment is currency
This is not realism. This is not entertainment.
This is theatre that comes at a cost, but is worth every moment.

HOW WE TRAIN . . .
Training happens in the rehearsal room, the green rooms, on stage, and on the tour bus.
Physical and vocal work is daily, demanding, and imperative for growth.
Failure is expected, examined, and used.
Apprentices rotate through roles: actor, director, technician, stage manager.
No one hides. No one coasts.

WHAT WE VALUE . . .
We value:
> Risk over comfort
> Ensemble over individual
> Presence over performance
Apprentices are evaluated not by talent, but by attention, endurance, and integrity.

THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE . . .
This apprenticeship is for those who believe theatre still matters, in a world that has run amok.
If you are ready to work, to risk, to respect, and to be stripped of shortcuts—
Youtheatre will train you.

Next step is up to you. Are you ready to be involved with an unabashed community of believers who want nothing more than to live out the call on their lives? Now is the time.

This innovative school of acting is characterized by the unique principles and methods of those theatre giants who came before us, Artaud, Brecht, Stanislavski, even Mamet and Meisner. All have revolutionized traditional approaches to performance. Central to our philosophy is the pursuit of simplicity and truthfulness in acting. The YTM Equipping Centre aims to strip away artificiality and reveal the raw essence of human behavior on stage and screen. Lee Jay emphasizes the power of action and objectives, believing that effective acting stems from the tangible pursuit of goals within a scene. His methods encourage actors to focus on the rhythm and dynamics of dialogue, finding the natural cadence and intensity in speech to create compelling performances.
